The relationship between food and the signs of aging – Loma Linda University Health

It’s no secret that it’s important to eat healthy and stay in optimal health. Food contains nutrients that our bodies need to function properly, and those same nutrients can help maintain our youthful energy and appearance. Combating the signs of aging in the healthiest of ways means eating some of these specific nutrients. Subhas Gupta, MD, chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Loma Linda University Health, shares key foods to implement in nutrition for aging well.
Skin and hair may be the first body parts that show signs of aging. As we age, we all reach a critical point when our natural elasticity is overcome, and we start to show fine lines and wrinkles. “Our hair starts to thin and lose its color,” Gupta says. “While these things are all inevitable, there are certain foods that can help fight these signs of aging and help you look more youthful longer.”
Finding foods that can help reduce the loss of bone density and help make bones stronger is also important to reduce the signs of aging.
Gupta adds that facial skin appears to droop as we lose some of our underlying bone. Foods that are rich in calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3s are all great at helping to improve bone health and maintain the fullness of the face.
“Be sure to consider how diet could be affecting the signs of aging,” Gupta says. “It’s clear that certain foods keep us healthier, and it’s important to know what foods can help reduce the signs of aging and not only improve health but physical appearance as well.”
