In a new video released on World Children’s Day, Primary General President Susan H. Porter expressed the hope of the Primary general presidency that “all children will be valued, protected and empowered, and that they will feel God’s love for them.”
World Children’s Day is commemorated every year on Nov. 20 to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide and improving children’s welfare. On this day in 1959 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
The declaration defines children’s rights to protection, education, health care, shelter and good nutrition, explained President Porter in the video posted to Instagram and Facebook.
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints works with international humanitarian organizations to support the health, safety and nutrition of children all over the world,” she said. “These projects aim to give all children an opportunity to live a long and successful life.”
The video shows children playing, reading, learning in school and receiving donations like warm clothing. Children are also shown receiving medical care and eye exams. These are part of the key priorities for the Church in its humanitarian outreach around the world, like vision care, immunization, maternal and newborn care, food security, clean water and more.
The theme for this World Children’s Day is “Inclusion, for Every Child.” In the video, President Porter said, “It is important that we listen to each child’s ideas and how to create a better world for their future.”
The video ends as she asks, “How can you support the children in your life?”
President Porter served as a counselor in the Primary general presidency before being sustained as president in April 2022 general conference. She told the Church News before her new calling took effect in August how she has prayerfully pondered the needs of children around the world.
“I often think about the importance of having tender hearts toward children,” President Porter said then. “A lot of them are suffering in so many ways — war, famine, food insecurity, anxiety, family challenges, the pandemic — so, my heart has turned to the Lord, trying to receive revelation as to how we can strengthen and bless His children around the world.”
