Kilgore High School’s Health Science Club will host their first-ever Health Science Fair Monday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the KHS cafeteria. The event is free for anyone to attend.

Kilgore High School’s Health Science Club will host their first-ever Health Science Fair Monday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the KHS cafeteria. The event is free for anyone to attend.
Kilgore High School’s Health Science Club will host their first-ever Health Science Fair Monday, Jan. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the KHS cafeteria. The event is free for anyone to attend.
“This is the first health fair,” Cheyenne Kirkpatrick, KHS Health Science teacher and coach, said. She has helped Kilgore health science students launch several new activities, including a marathon challenge, in which participants log their walking distances to total the full 26.2 miles of a standard marathon, as well as a 5K “Color Dash.”
“We hope to make it an annual event. We’ve done the marathon challenge and we will be encouraging people to start that challenge at this event, but everything else, this is the first time.”
The Health Science Fair will allow KHS students to demonstrate knowledge and skills they have learned in their health science classes while also helping other students and faculty share in their knowledge. Health Science students will set up a large variety of booths at the fair to show other what they have learned.
“The different booths the students are doing are material they have learned in class,” Kirkpatrick said.
“Teaching the material to others strengthens their knowledge as well as shares this information with our community. It’s so encouraging to see the students explain the topics and skills we have taught them to others. We have had visitors (adults and elementary) in the classroom before where students have taught them, but this will be on a much larger scale. Also, a large component of working in the medical field is talking to others. This opportunity works on the confidence to talk to others and build the communication skill set.”
KHS Health Science students learn skills and techniques which can help them obtain jobs and career in medical and health fields after graduation, while also preparing them to pursue health-focused higher education at colleges and universities.
Kirkpatrick said the fair will include community participation, as different local health resource groups and businesses will join in the fair and are looking forward to being a part of the event.
In addition to being a learning opportunity for Kilgore students, the fair will also help the community learn skills which could potentially save lives.
“I have had several people who are very excited to come learn and practice CPR. Every year I do a short class with our graduating seniors to teach them CPR. All of the Health Science students earn the full CPR certification. Students from both of these groups have stepped into action and saved lives! One saved a child choking in Walmart one day, another saved her 3-year old cousin the day after learning what to do. Students have also performed CPR on their own parents. You never know when you may need this skill, hopefully never, but if the situation occurs, a short explanation and practice at the health fair could be the difference.”
The Health Science Fair will include a variety of both vendor and student booths, each demonstrating a different topic of skill.

Kilgore Lions Club — Vision Screening
Superior Plumbing — The importance of proper plumbing. They will show how improper plumbing can contaminate the water supply system.
Special Health Resources — SHR is a non-profit organization that offers healthcare in 23 counties of East Texas. They have behavioral health, dental, obgyn/maternity, pediatrics, primary care, programs that help with substance use, and free HIV, Hep-c, Syphilis testing along with special healthcare for infectious disease. United Healthcare Dental — A Texas Dental Care Organization serving kids 0-21 on CHIP or Children’s Medicaid by helping them find a dentist, arrange for transportation, get care for complex conditions and have some fun rewards for healthy habits like getting an annual checkup. UHD will share educational information, handouts and dental hygiene goodie bags.
Children’s Defense Fund — A non-profit organization that assists connecting families to health coverage and also assists families with SNAP.
Olive’s Escape Medical Spa — An East Texas day spa founded with one goal in mind — to provide services for all things beautiful, relaxing, and serene. At Olive’s Escape Medical Spa, the focus is on health and wellness, on the outside as well as the inside. They offer services such as, weight loss, IV hydration, full-body waxing, V-steam, body contouring and much more.
O2 Body & Sole Reflexions — Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternative medical practice involving the application of pressure to specific points on the feet and/or hands. This is done using thumb, finger, and hand massage techniques with or without the use of oils or lotion. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may help alleviate stress. The theory behind reflexology is that areas of the foot correspond to organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to the foot is believed to bring relaxation and healing to the corresponding area of the body.

Dietitian — A dietitian is a profession identifying and treating disease-related malnutrition and in conducting medical nutrition therapies
Student Booths
CPR — Are you prepared for an emergency? Learn how to do compressions and ask questions.
Choking — practice doing abdominal thrusts using a trainer. Also, how to assist an infant who is choking.
AED — These are located in many buildings around you. Do you know what it is or how to use it? We will show you!
Splinting — Do you know how to make a splint or sling out of the objects you have?
Hand Washing — The importance of hand washing. Are you washing your hands well?
Glove Removal — Do you know how to take gloves off without getting anything on you?
Blood Pressure — Check your blood pressure. Is it within normal range?
Phone Emergency ID — Do you know how to set up your phone emergency ID? How to access the emergency ID on a stranger’s phone? We will show you!
Stop Bleeding — Do you know how to apply a tourniquet?
Marathon Challenge — We challenge you to walk or run 26.2 miles over the next 2 months!
5K Color Dash — If you complete the marathon challenge, you are invited to do the 5K for free!
