Cervical Cancer Awareness Month brings recognition to the first line of defense to prevent cervical cancer: A Pap test.
The Weld County Department of Public Health & Environment, partnered with the Women’s Wellness Connection, urges residents between the ages of 21-64 to schedule a Pap test with their health care provider.
A Pap test is the first line of defense in the fight against cervical cancer, according to the county’s health department release. If cervical cancer is detected early, those diagnosed have a 71.4% five-year survival rate.
It is uncommon for cervical cancer to show signs or symptoms, according to Michelle Delgado, Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment Women’s Wellness Connection Outreach Worker. Because of this, Delgado indicated a Pap test is the best way to determine a diagnosis.
Women’s Wellness Connection offers free cervical cancer screenings, along with any necessary additional follow-up testing, to eligible Colorado residents between the ages of 21-64.
Those who earn less than 250% of the federal poverty level and have no health insurance, or have health insurance but can’t afford to pay deductibles or copays, meet the eligibility requirements for the free services.
Nearly 14,480 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year in the United States. About 4,290 people die from this type of cancer, which has a 66.3% survival rate, according to the release.
African Americans, who have the highest cervical cancer death rate, and Latinx have a greater risk of developing cervical cancer. Many social, economic and environmental inequities may contribute to adverse health outcomes, which is acknowledged by the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.
“Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to remind community members that these tests could be the difference between life and death,” Delgado said in the release. “Women’s Wellness Connection offers free screenings. I urge everyone to get screened, even if they have not been able to afford these tests before.”
