The Secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities begins an official visit to the United States on Wednesday, a country where emigrants are so well integrated that the challenge is to “prevent a disconnection with their Portuguese identity”.

It is “a community that has shown over the years an innovative capacity, an unusual initiative and a real courage to face difficulties”, Paulo Cafôfo told Lusa agency.
On this visit, the official hopes to highlight the “successes” of the Portuguese community in the United States, but also “the difficulties they have faced and continue to face”.
“The challenge we have in this community of ours, which is very well integrated, and with an assimilation with the North American community, is that this good integration does not mean disconnecting from its Portuguese identity”, he stressed.
