Montgomery Advertiser to halt Saturday print edition, expand access to USA Today Network e-Editions – Montgomery Advertiser

Responding to continued rapid shifts toward digital news consumption, the Montgomery Advertiser will discontinue home delivery of Saturday print editions beginning March 26 and expand subscriber access to news products across the USA TODAY Network. 
The Advertiser will continue to produce a full digital replica of the newspaper seven days a week, with local news, sports, advertising and features such as comics and puzzles. Subscribers will also get expanded access to e-Editions throughout the USA TODAY Network, including USA Today and its popular crossword puzzle.
The Montgomery Advertiser is part of the USA TODAY Network, and the change being announced today is also taking place at numerous other publications in the network, including the Tuscaloosa News and the Gadsden Times. Those papers will also move to a six-day-a-week print model with e-Editions produced seven days a week.
“The e-Edition is a digital replica of the print paper, so readers can still get a digital experience of reading the paper, page by page,” said Montgomery Advertiser Executive Editor Paige O. Windsor.

News consumer habits have changed. What was once solely a daily newspaper has transformed to include a digital site and mobile app with round-the-clock updates, an e-Edition, newsletters, social media posts, podcasts and mobile push alerts.
Windsor said other newspaper companies, such as Advance, began to shift away from daily print newspapers a decade ago. That company, which owns newspapers in Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile, prints and delivers newspapers only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in those markets. 
“Our print newspapers remain a vital and important part of our strategy. We’re making this change in response to changing consumer habits and advertiser needs,” Windsor said. “We are committed to covering local news and publishing it on a variety of platforms to meet reader needs and habits.”
The change comes with expanded subscriber access to the USA TODAY Network’s full suite of e-Editions across the country, as well as ad-free access to the USA TODAY Crossword puzzle.
“Not everyone loves going to a website to get their news. We get that,” she said. “We held on as long as possible because we know we have readers who prefer holding a newspaper. But we’re excited to have a product like the e-Edition that offers the look and feel of the print version and also lets readers clip and share articles with friends and family and even adjust the print size.”

All print subscribers of Montgomery Advertiser already have full local digital access, meaning they have the ability to read news updates throughout the day, subscriber-only stories and video and audio features, among other benefits. Subscribers also have 24/7 access to obituaries, legal notices, and classifieds on our website.
News and sales staffing at the Montgomery Advertiser will not change as a result of this. Delivery times for the other days of the week will remain unchanged.
