Authorities are investigating the deaths of a New Hampshire couple who were found fatally shot days after they went for a walk in a hiking area near their home, officials said Friday.
The bodies of Stephen Reid, 67, and Djeswende Reid, 66, were discovered Thursday evening in a wooded area in Concord, police said.
Autopsies later determined the couple died of multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of deaths was homicide, the attorney general and Concord police chief said in a statement.
According to a news release from the Office of the Attorney General, the Reids left their home Monday afternoon and went for a walk that led them to the Broken Ground Trails area. Family and friends did not see or hear from them after that, authorities said, and the couple was reported missing.
“This is a tragedy, and it’s something that came out of nowhere, and we’re doing our due diligence, investing all of our resources, working with our state and local partners, to bring this case to a successful resolution,” Concord Police Chief Bradley Osgood said, according to NBC Boston, after the couple’s bodies were found.
Neighbors also expressed their concerns about the couple’s tragic and suspicious deaths.
“It’s strange. This is a very peaceful neighborhood and they’re talking about murder,” Doug Ponusky, who lives nearby, told NBC Boston. “I never lock my doors. I think I’m gonna lock them tonight.”
The Concord Police Department has asked anyone who saw the couple, has information about the Reids’ disappearance or video surveillance systems in the area to contact authorities.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Concord Police Department for further comments.
