Dear DePauw Students, Staff and Faculty,
As we consider our community’s return from spring break and continue to monitor COVID-19 infection rates, we would like to share updates to our current COVID-19 policies that will go into effect April 4.
For two years, DePauw joined the rest of the world in support of COVID-19 mitigation strategies to better protect ourselves and each other. Public health regulations were implemented at DePauw for two reasons. 1) Individual health: Significant sections of our community did not have the means to protect themselves from the health threat. 2) Community/infrastructure impact: The infrastructure of the community could have collapsed in the absence of such regulations.
We have entered a phase in the COVID-19 pandemic where public health experts support relaxing many of the mitigation strategies. Moreover, all members of the DePauw community have access to at-home tests and effective masks, and most have the ability to receive vaccines that significantly reduce the likelihood of severe disease. Individuals can protect themselves through the use of KF94, KN95, N95 or surgical masks which are widely available. Likewise, community infrastructure on campus and in Putnam County are stable and manageable. Accordingly, we have made adjustments to our mitigation strategies as outlined below, including shifting to personal health decisions based on one’s own individual risks.
DePauw’s mitigation team will continue to monitor and adjust COVID-19 regulations and procedures as necessary. Changes will occur if evidence suggests impacts on community infrastructure and/or individual health with new COVID-19 variants.
We are adopting the following campus-wide policies following spring break for students and employees:
Masking
Masking is recommended on campus and surgical, KF94, KN95, or N95 masks will remain required during the following instances throughout spring term:
Classes and labs (in the case that course content or pedagogy requires an exception, an exemption request may be sent to the Vice President for Academic Affairs or the Dean of the School of Music).
Health care settings (DePauw Health Wellness Center, Counseling Services and athletic training rooms).
Intercollegiate athletics if directed by NCAA and NCAC guidance.
Specific university-sponsored events.
Whom to contact if you need testing or have symptoms
Call DePauw Health Wellness Center (765-658-4555) if you do not have access to at-home testing or if you are experiencing symptoms.
If you test positive for COVID-19
Beginning April 4, individuals who test positive must follow public health guidance to reduce transmission of COVID-19. Determine how long to isolate and how to prevent spreading virus to others after you leave isolation by using this isolation calculator. Masking through day 10 is required to avoid transmission to others. When strict isolation ends after 5 days, it is necessary to wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask for any interactions with other people for the full 10 days.
For students, isolate in your current residential space and report the results to the CARE Team ([email protected]). Student-athletes must also report a positive COVID-19 test to their athletics trainer. Students may pick up meals as grab-and-go and must wear a mask through day 10. We are prepared to support students who have additional needs.
For employees, isolate away from campus. You are not expected to work if you are sick. Connect with your supervisor to determine if working remotely is an option. Utilize standard sick time during this period. There is no longer a COVID-19 sick time code. Any work absence of more than five consecutive days will require employees to contact HR directly.
Contact Tracing
DePauw staff will no longer conduct contact tracing on behalf of individuals. If you have tested positive, contact individuals with whom you have had close contact. One way to anonymously notify your contacts is using the Tell Your Contacts site. If you receive a message that you were a close contact of a person with COVID-19, follow guidance for close contacts of a COVID-19 positive individual. To determine if you should quarantine and for how long, use this calculator. Call DePauw Health Wellness Center (765-658-4555) if you do not have access to at-home testing or if you are experiencing symptoms.
Socializing
There are no official COVID-19-imposed limits on social gatherings. Individuals should understand their personal risks and use standard mitigation strategies to keep themselves healthy.
Our sincerest gratitude goes to every member of our community. Those who have participated in prevention strategies, including vaccination, testing, isolation, quarantining and mask wearing have enabled our campus to get to this point. Together, we are keeping our campus vibrant, healthy and Gold Within.
Sincerely,
COVID-19 Mitigation Team
