MERIDEN — Last Saturday, community members gathered at the Meriden Green to get a glimpse of some of the health resources in the area.

Meriden Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at  300 Paddock Ave, organized its first annual health fair, featuring health education, prevention resources, music and family activities.

In addition, the church handed out 75 bags of food that included rice, cereal, canned food, pasta, boxed food and beans. Chips, water, and granola bars were also handed out to attendees.

Stephanie Cubero, member of Meriden Seventh-day Adventist Church and an organizer of the event, introduced people to the different programs available, including Hartford Healthcare’s Cancer Institute.

Jennifer Vélez, Meriden resident, was passing the Meriden Green after leaving work when she noticed the event.

“They called me over and told me to take a look,” she said. “Me and my kids usually come to all the events no matter what it is. We like to participate and see what the community is offering.”

The Community Health Advocate Training program participated in the event. The program offers “online training designed to educate, equip and engage Seventh-day Adventists with the high calling of using health to bless the world…” according to its website.

“We are church based and train members in our community to be health advocates,” said Tom Dombrowski, a CHAT volunteer.

The youth group from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Pathfinders, were also at the event.

“They are a group of youths from the church that help serve the community,” said church member Andrea González. “In every Seventh-Day Adventist Church globally, they all have their own Pathfinder group.”

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has over 21 million members and 95,297 churches worldwide, according to its website.
