Will the mask mandate be dropped in Saint Lucia?
As several countries review their COVID-19 protocols which include no longer wearing a face mask, Loop News posed the question to Moses Jn Baptiste, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs in Saint Lucia.
According to Minister Jn Baptiste, the island’s COVID-19 protocols are reviewed periodically and the Government takes their lead from the health professionals.
“The mask mandate – people ask me about this every time and my response is very simple: Masks are very important in the fight against COVID-19, Monkeypox and so on and yes there will be a review of not just the mask mandate but the COVID-19 situation and everything else relating to COVID-19. So when the next review comes up, our decision should be based on the advice of the medical professional,” Jn Baptiste stated.
The United Stated and the UK, two of Saint Lucia’s biggest tourism markets no longer require wearing a face mask.
The British Virgin Islands is one of the first islands to drop the mask mandate, and while Saint Lucia is yet to make such a decision, Minister Jn Baptiste urge citizens to not become complacent.
“I advise Saint Lucians to continue to wear your mask as much as possible especially in enclosed situations and if you are with people who are unvaccinated, if you are in situations which can compromise your own health it is important to wear mask,” he stated.
He adds while the country continue to open up, COVID-19 is still around coupled with threats of other diseases, the likes of Monkeypox.
