Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, more than 100 Russian tanks reportedly have been destroyed or damaged. Some social media users claim Ukrainians are selling captured tanks on eBay.

The post generated more than 700 interactions in less than a week. A Twitter post with the same image and claim has amassed more than 120,000 likes since it was published March 2. Similar posts have amassed hundreds of interactions on Facebook and Twitter.

But the claim is false, as independent fact-checking organizations have reported. An eBay spokesperson told USA TODAY the listing is not authentic. The image in the post dates back to 2010.
USA TODAY reached out to social media users who shared the claim for comment.
Trina Somera, an eBay spokesperson, told USA TODAY in an email that the post does not show a real listing. It does not appear on the eBay website, either.
The sale of military items, including weapons and vehicles, is prohibited on eBay. USA TODAY found a listing that claims to advertise a Russian T-72 tank, but Somera said the product was a toy.
