PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — The United States women’s curling team, skipped by Duluthian Cory Christensen, finished fifth in a field of 13 teams at the World Women’s Curling Championship, which concludes this weekend in Western Canada.
The tournament trail ended Saturday for the team of Christensen, Vicky Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Sarah and Taylor Anderson (Broomall, Pennsylvania) with an 8-6 quarterfinal loss to Sweden.
The Americans notched a pair in the eighth end to take a 5-4 lead and then built on it with a steal of one in the ninth. But with the hammer in the 10th end, Sweden skip Anna Hasselborg used an angle raise on her first throw to set up a big end, then took out the remaining American stone on her last shot for a game-winning four.
Sweden, which featured the same team that won the Olympic bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, advances to a semifinal vs. Switzerland on Saturday night, with Canada and South Korea competing for the other place in the final on Sunday.
The U.S. finished round-robin play with an 8-4 record, winning its last three draws. The win streak started with a 5-4 decision over Sweden on Thursday night and included a forfeit win against a Scotland team that was one of two that could not complete the tournament due to COVID-19 protocols.
