Just when we thought the worst was over, the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in many parts of the world including China, South Korea, Hong Kong and certain European countries has worried experts around the world. Recently, China reported its first coronavirus-related deaths in a year, even when the country is under a stringent lockdown.
“These increase are occurring despite reductions in testing in some countries, which means the cases we’re seeing are just the tip of the iceberg,” The World Health Organization’s head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press interaction. Additionally, the WHO also listed down some factors that could be driving the uptick in COVID-19 cases around the world.
Stealth Omicron or BA.2 is a subvariant of the highly contagious Omicron variant. It is currently a ‘variant under investigation’ in the United Kingdom, but is said to be the driving force for the current surge in COVID-19 cases around the world, as per the WHO.
Experts believe the BA.2 subvariant is missing key mutations in the spike protein, which is integral to the detecting process, making it difficult for healthcare providers to track it.
While the WHO hasn’t announced a verdict, it believes that BA.2 is currently the most transmissible variant so far. Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s COVID-19 technical head, had earlier said, “Omicron is transmitting at a very intense level… We have sub-lineages of BA.1 and BA.2. BA.2 is more transmissible and this is the most transmissible variant we have seen of the SARS-COV2 virus to date.”
According to the global health agency, another reason for the sudden rise in COVID-19 cases is the lifting of restrictions and the easing of lockdowns. With the emergence of the Omicron variant, countries around the world had imposed strict COVID measures. However, as cases began to plummet, in order to get economies back on track, officials lifted all the restrictions. This has led to a rise in coronavirus cases, says the WHO.
As per the organization, one must continue taking all necessary measures, get themselves vaccinated and not let their guards down yet.
The WHO head, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that low vaccination rates in some countries is due to a “huge amount of misinformation”, reads a Reuters report. Furthermore, misinformation and fake news about the pandemic ending after Omicron may also have added fuel to the fire, as per the official.
On Tuesday, Dr Maria Van Kerkhove noted, “”In the last four weeks… the amount of misinformation seems to be getting worse…”
Dr Mike Ryan, the WHO’s executive director of the Health Emergencies Programme warned against letting one’s guard down. “”The idea ‘we are through with it’ in the northern hemisphere and have to wait till next winter… we need to be very vigilant and cautious with this,” he said.
Wearing masks, maintaining social distance and taking your hand hygiene seriously is the need of the hour. We must neither overlook the possibility of another emerging variant, nor should we cross out the chance of waning immunity from vaccines or natural infection. Staying on guard, taking precautionary measures can contain the spread of the virus and keep vulnerable people safe. Get your vaccination on time and if you’re eligible for the booster dose, take it immediately.
