Cape May Rotary Park is ready for the holiday season with Christmas lights, red bows and a decorated tree under the park’s pavilion.
Cape May has one of the best public holiday light displays in America, according to the USA Today “10 Best” Readers Choice Awards.
James Ridgeway, the president of the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce, attributed the recognition from USA Today to the city’s Victorian charm.
“Cape May is a wonderful sight during the holiday season,” Ridgway said in a news release issued by the chamber of commerce. “Our visitors tell us that we resemble a Dickens Village with the lights on our Victorian homes and businesses complemented with the gas lamps on our streets.”
The chamber of commerce news release also ties the city’s recognition by USA Today to its Light Up Cape May contest. The chamber of commerce created the contest for homes and businesses in 2015, believing that the city needed more lights for the holiday season. The contest receives support from community partners and sponsors such as Atlantic City Electric and Cape May MAC.
Elaine’s Cape May was the overall business winner of Light Up Cape May in 2021, with various businesses on the Washington Street Mall, including the Cape May Fish Market, Bath Time and Victorious winning awards for their holiday window displays. People can visit lightupcapemaynj.com for a full list of winners.
Cape May’s recognition in USA Today was perhaps also driven by its special events. During the holiday season, the city organizes trolley tours, carriage rides, as well as concerts and productions at Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater Company through New Year’s Day.
The city provides amenities after the holiday season as well, with its bed-and-breakfasts, wineries, and restaurants. The news release urges people interested about what Cape May has to offer during the winter to contact the chamber of commerce at (609) 884-5508.
