Alabama will be represented this year on the USA Wheelchair Rugby’s America’s Championship team by Tallassee resident Montrerius Hucherson.
“It’s been a process for me, two years to be exact. I have been waiting on this moment and now it’s finally here. It’s hard to channel all the emotions I have, I go from being excited, nervous, pumped up, and anxious. Just have to go in it with a level head and play my game,” Hucherson told The Herd today.
The Americas Championship in Colombia is the first of several international competitions for USAWR in 2022. The team will also compete in a Four Nations event, which includes Great Britain, Canada, and Japan, at Lakeshore Foundation July 17-24. The team will finish this year’s competition in October as they travel to Denmark for the World Championships.
“I’m honored to help lead this group of athletes down to Colombia for the Americas Championships, as we try and qualify for our upcoming World Championships in Denmark later this year,” Chuck Aoki, team co-captain, said.
Lakeshore Foundation is the center for USA Wheelchair Rugby. Teams and staff travel from across the country to Birmingham several times each year for training camps and competitions at Lakeshore.
“We are looking forward to getting our competitive season started at the Americas Championships,” Joe Delagrave, USAWR Interim Head Coach said. “We hope to gain some experience and gel together ahead of the World Championships this October,” Delagrave added.
We are excited to announce the 12 athletes who will represent USAWR at the 2022 Americas Wheelchair Rugby Championship March 9-13 in Medellin, Colombia. Go USA! See thread for full roster.https://t.co/ap9C0FYTfm#USAWR #WheelchairRugby #Americas2022 pic.twitter.com/XxcDSJGlge
