WHEELING — Bringing the community together for family-friendly fun has been one of the main missions of Ziegenfelder Company throughout the decades of the Wheeling-based frozen treat company’s existence.
The company will complete that mission in a cool new way this Memorial Day weekend, joining in on the good times of the Ogden Wellness Weekend, presented by WVU Medicine. Ziegenfelder is the sponsor of three races that allow even more community members the opportunity to get some exercise and come together in Wheeling over the long holiday weekend.
“This is an event that’s a staple of the community and we want to be a part of that,” said Brad Allen, Ziegenfelder Co. sales and marketing director. “We’re fortunate to have an opportunity to do that. I’m surprised it took us this long. I wish we could have done it sooner. I’m just happy we have the opportunity to do it.”
Allen said the seeds for Ziegenfelder’s participation were sown when the company saw the Wellness Weekend expand to include the Tough As Nails Challenge, presented by The Health Plan.
Company officials then asked themselves what they could do, what part they could play in making the weekend even bigger.
They ultimately attached themselves to a trio of races, all running the morning of Saturday, May 28. The 5K Twin Pops Run/Walk for Health, presented by Ziegenfelder, begins at 7:50 a.m for the walk and 8 a.m. for the run that morning. That course will take runners as far north as 12th Street in Wheeling and as far south as 34th Street.
Then comes a pair of events catered to the community’s kids. The Ogden Fun Run, presented by Ziegenfelder, is for runners ages 12 and younger and will take them through downtown Wheeling starting at 8:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., the little ones will be able to participate in the Tiny Tot Trot, presented by Ziegenfelder. Children ages 4-5 will run first, followed by children ages 3 and younger.
“One of the goals of the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend is to showcase the Ohio Valley and the people who make our communities so special,” said Perry Nardo, general manager of The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register. “The idea of ‘Community First’ is a hallmark of what the Ziegenfelder Corp. stands for, and we are very appreciative of their support not only of our 5K running and walking events, but of the Ohio Valley.”
Sponsoring those races is special, Allen said, because it gives people who might not be up for a half-marathon or urban challenge the chance to participate.
“We want everybody to enjoy something we can be a part of,” he said.
Those events will happen on the same day as the Ogden Half-Marathon. On Sunday, May 29, is the Tough As Nails Urban Challenge, presented by The Health Plan.
Allen ran the Ogden Half-Marathon for the first time in 2012, so he knows well the race’s history and its meaning to the Ohio Valley Community. He’s happy to see Ziegenfelder Co. join in helping make the Ogden Wellness Weekend even bigger and better.
“To be able to put our name with it and have an impact on the community, and just let people know that we’re here and we care about them,” he said. “We want people to be healthy and want people to engage in community events. We love the Ohio Valley and want to see it grow. I’m looking forward to it and looking forward to having a long partnership”.
