Join parks staff this winter as we get out on the Union Canal Trail to enjoy an hour-long walk along the Tulpehocken Creek. Getting moving this time of year can be tough, but studies show that outdoor time is just as important in winter as in the warmer months of the year. Just a few minutes of walking can greatly improve your state of mind, create healthy habits, and develop new connections with others who are looking to do the same!
The Winter Wellness Walks will take place on three Saturdays – January 8, February 12 and March 12 – and are scheduled early enough in the day from 9 to 10 a.m. so that you can easily feel good about checking off the exercise box before tackling the rest of your to-do list. Just 30 minutes of walking boasts many benefits to our overall health and wellbeing, so imagine what an hour can do!
The Union Canal Trail is great for any ability level and speed, and attendees can choose the distance they’d like to go. The important part is getting out there and having fun. The trail itself is mostly flat, consisting of gravel, short sections of pavement around the Heritage Center, and vistas of Wertz’s Red Bridge, Lock 47, and the Tulpehocken Creek. We’ll meet in the Heritage Center parking lot and stroll north along the trail, stopping briefly at points of interest. Wear walking shoes or other appropriate footwear, bring water, and dress accordingly.
Inclement weather or poor trail conditions may cancel individual event dates. Registration at least 24 hours in advance is preferred. Please email [email protected] or call 610-374-2944, ext. 2611 to register or for more information.
This program is presented by the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department.
