Two local softball stalwarts, John White and Don Alexander, were inducted into the USA Softball Northwest Mountain Region 9 Hall of Fame during a recent ceremony in Clackamas.
Blitz-Weinhard from Medford was also inducted, becoming the first team to be enshrined into the Region 9 Hall of Fame.
Alexander, who was part of the Class of 2021 that had to wait a year due to the pandemic, is a former Prospect Schools superintendent that began his umpiring career in 1971. Ten years ago, Alexander was appointed Oregon’s USA Softball UIC, while also helping with umpires for the Oregon Special Olympics.
Alexander is currently the co-chair of the Umpire Committee at the USA Softball National Council Meeting.
White, who is currently the head softball coach at Eagle Point High, had a 22-year career playing men’s fastpitch softball. Over his two-plus decades playing fastpitch, White made over 100 different All-Star teams and played in 11 regional championship games.
Last year, White released his first book entitled “A Sidelined Coach Riding Out The Coronavirus,” with stories from his fastpitch softball playing days.
Blitz-Weinhard, which was together from 1979-1988 and had White as a player, had its best season as a team in 1980 when it finished third at the state tournament before winning the ASA Regionals in Billings, Mont. The title in Montana allowed Blitz-Weinhard to advance to the Men’s Fast Pitch A Division National Tournament in Oswego, New York, where the local team made it all the way to the championship game. They lost 3-2 in 10 innings to S&H Good of Pennsylvania.
Prior to Alexander and White, former North Medford softball coach Larry Binney was the last local individual inducted to the Region 9 Hall of Fame back in 2019.
