PHILADELPHIA – In coordination with the American Athletic Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s Pow6rful Minds campaign, Temple is set to host two mental health awareness games this weekend. The women’s basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. will serve as the first game in light of mental health followed by the men’s basketball game on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.
Along with men’s and women’s basketball, many other programs across Temple Athletics have spotlighted mental health awareness, hosting their own mental health awareness games during their respective seasons.
This is the fifth year of the initiative, which focuses on creating awareness around mental health issues as well as guiding student-athletes in the direction of proper resources. As mental health becomes more prevalent in the world today, this initiative aims to end the stigma associated with seeking help while promoting the success of a student-athlete through their healthy and powerful mind.
Temple has expanded upon the Pow6rful Minds campaign, implementing their own initiatives to help end the stigma and provide support to their athletes on North Broad.
“We really prioritize mental health and wellness here at Temple,” said Stephany Coakley, the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Mental Health. “We make it a priority to talk about it every day to our student-athletes, utilizing our social media channels to continuously get our message across.”
This week, members of the Student-Athlete Mental Health Advocate Group are taking over the TUOwlsWellness Instagram page to talk about their time as a Division I athlete, sharing raw experiences relating to the pressures they face, the time commitment needed and how prioritizing mental health is essential to being your best self.
“We know that the Surgeon General of the United States said that the youth of our country are in a mental health crisis,” Coakley said. “We have seen this in many ways throughout society, so this semester we decided to take a proactive approach in the form of a wellness day.”
Beginning this semester, each team will be given a wellness day in their season which will give student-athletes the opportunity to take a day to prioritize their rest, connections, sleep, nutrition, or anything needed to enhance their overall wellness. Being a student-athlete comes with a lot of demands, whether that be academically or athletically, and this initiative aims to stay ahead of burnout, giving the student-athlete the time to prioritize themselves when it is most needed.
In preparation for the mental health awareness games this coming weekend, student-athletes are urged to wear their “Mental Health is Health. Period.” T-shirts that were received by all Temple student-athletes in hopes of spreading awareness and highlighting the normalcy of mental health.
