Rutgers University-New Brunswick is one of the nation’s top 20 public universities, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings released today.
Named #19 of Top Public Schools, Rutgers-New Brunswick climbed higher in the rankings from #23 last year. Rutgers University-Newark (#53) and Rutgers University-Camden (#61) also moved higher among the top 100 public universities
The rankings also revealed advances universitywide among all national universities: Rutgers-New Brunswick ranked #55, up from #63 last year; Rutgers-Newark moved up to #115 from #127; and Rutgers-Camden was ranked #127, up from #148.
“It is gratifying and affirming to see rising rankings that are an outgrowth of our work across the university,” said Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway. “Building on Rutgers’ academic excellence and supporting our first-rate faculty, transforming the lives of our remarkable students and cultivating innovations that improve the world we live in are reflected in the new rankings.”
Rutgers also was highlighted for its support for veterans and its emphasis on social mobility for students. Rutgers-New Brunswick was named #27 among Best Colleges for Veterans, up from #33 last year. Rutgers-Newark ranked #71, up from #79, and Rutgers-Camden ranked #83, up three spots.
For social mobility, Rutgers-Newark was in the top 10 of national universities at #7, while Rutgers-Camden ranked #30 and Rutgers-New Brunswick #63. Since 2019, U.S. News has factored in a school’s success at promoting social mobility by measuring the success of students who received federal Pell Grants, among other factors. Students who receive federal Pell Grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually.
The Best Colleges rankings, begun by U.S. News & World Report in the mid-1980s, this year assessed an all-time high of 1,500 U.S. bachelor’s degree-granting institutions on 17 measures of academic quality. Only academic data from its surveys of higher education institutions and reliable third-party sources, including academic peers, are used to calculate each ranking factor.
U.S. News notes that 40 percent of a school’s rank stems from seven different outcomes measuring its success at enrolling, retaining and graduating students from diverse backgrounds with manageable debt. Five factors related to a school’s faculty, including class size and the number of instructional faculty compared with the number of students, account for 20 percent of a school’s rank.
“Rutgers’ improvement in these educational rankings is a testament to our outstanding faculty, their scholarship and dedication to educating and preparing our students to pursue a fulfilling future,” said Prabhas Moghe, executive vice president for academic affairs.
