Objective is to make Public Health strong and independent
At a press briefing this week, Sabrina Turner, Minister for Health, Wellness & Home Affairs, shared information on a business case for making Public Health a separate department from the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA).
Commenting on the business case, Minister Turner said:
Cabinet has approved, in principle, for the ministry to develop a business case to reform Public Health at the national level.
This will include Public Health being separated from the HSA as we know it.
Loop News understands from Minister Turner’s explanation that the intention of the move is to enhance the independence of Public Health, which is currently located within the HSA, a health services provider which competes with others for the provision of health services in the Cayman Islands.
According to the Interim Chief Medical Officer, Dr Autilia Newton, the improvement will also allow Public Health to collect information, not only from the public sector but from the private sector as well.
Dr Newton also shared that the idea “is not something which is unique to Cayman… and the key message which is coming out… is Public Health needs to be strong, independent and able to collect information which is country wide and needs to be provided then to the policy maker so that the right decision can be made.”
