But the 35-year-old from Southern California defined his legacy with compliments for his rivals, including Team Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, who spun his way to the gold medal with a triple cork.
“Everybody was asking me what my legacy in this sport has been. And you’re watching it,” White told the Los Angeles Times. “They’ve been on my heels every step of the way and to see them finally surpass me, is I think deep down what I always wanted: to be beaten. … That triple was incredible. It was the biggest air of the day. I know [Hirano] wanted it. It’s his time.”
Hirano’s triple cork — the first one landed in Olympic history — involved the snowboarder completing three flips. He followed that up with four more double corks.
“I hoped I could send a message to him by showing my ride to him,” Hirano said.
