St Lucia is moving closer to providing universal health coverage to citizens.
On September 21, the Centre of Excellence for the Management of Non-Communicable Diseases was commissioned in the community of Micoud.
Speaking to Loop News, Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Moses Jn Baptiste says the Micoud Wellness Centre will be the pilot for improved health services across the island.
In the case of the Micoud Wellness Centre, the focus will be on non-communicable diseases, increasing the services to residents who access the health facility.
“These additional services are new. The health and wellness centres across the island provide regular services to the people of St Lucia. Still, we are developing this concept where we will dramatically increase these services. For example, we are going to have nephrology services and additional services for men’s health, to name a few, all provided by specialists”, Minister Jn Baptiste disclosed.
Other services include sickle cell disease management, asthma management, dental care, maternal and child health, immunization, and sexual reproductive health.
According to the Health Minister, individuals can access these services at no cost to them. This, he added, will put less of a burden on the leading medical facilities, especially the Owen King EU Hospital and the St Jude Hospital.
“More importantly, it assists us with our goal to achieve universal health care, which is what we are after. So we are not waiting to deliver universal health care in one big push. But, still, by improving access and quality to health services to Saint Lucians”, Jn Baptiste declared.
Micoud North MP Jeremiah Nobert was present during the unveiling of the plaque for the Micoud Center of Excellence and expressed gratitude to those who’ve had a significant contribution to this development.
“More importantly, this Centre of Excellence is significantly special for the people of Micoud North and environs who will be the beneficiaries of this centre. Not too long ago, we were all gathered here to witness the official opening of the Micoud Wellness Center. Pronouncements were made that the Wellness Center would soon be transitioning into a centre of excellence and would have the capacity to provide a far more reaching service. I am pleased, excited, and jubilated because today we are doing good on our word and fulfilling our promise.”
Norbert says that the Micoud Center of Excellence unveils not only on providing care to patients but will also focus on preventative measures to reduce the contraction of non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes.
“I am happy that this centre of excellence will provide a high quality of specialized services, using best practices but more importantly adopting a holistic patient-centred approach which will incorporate the involvement of community stakeholders.”
The Micoud North MP is encouraging the people of his constituency and individuals in Micoud South to take advantage of the opportunity.
Norbert adds that his hope for the centre and the people of Micoud is the decrease in chronic illness and the increase in healthy living.
