STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Niche, the leading platform that connects students with colleges and schools, recently published its new 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings.
In its ninth year, the rankings include updated data for 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools and 11,820 school districts nationwide.
While traditional rankings rely almost exclusively on metrics like test scores and academic performance, Niche said its rankings combine user input — ratings from current students, alumni and parents — with quantitative data from sources like the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities, extracurricular activity opportunities and more.

Niche ranked school districts across the country, including those in New York City.
Some districts in the five boroughs ranked higher than others — but Staten Island made its way into the top 10 of the best public school districts in New York City.
Staten Island’s District 31 — which encompasses the entire borough of public schools — ranked the 6th best district in New York City. It also ranked 117th in the best school districts in New York State.
The district received an overall grade of an “A,” based on a number of factors like quality of academics, teachers, college prep, clubs and activities, administration and more.

Rankings by Niche were created to provide families with valuable information on schools in their area or in a neighborhood they aren’t familiar with yet. Like previous years, the Best Schools rankings include categories for boarding, charter and magnet schools, as well as schools for STEM and the arts — among many others.
