A new emergency response and fire safety tugboat has been built to protect new LNG import terminals in Poland
Remontowa Shipbuilding delivered Strażak-28 to the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority at its shipyard in Gdańsk, Poland, in November, after lengthy sea trials and performance tests of the vessel’s main equipment and facilities.
Strażak-28 is the third in the ZMPSiŚ fleet, with Strażak-24 moored in Szczecin and Strażak-26 in Świnoujście.
The vessel has a beam of 10.47 m, a shallow draught of 3.45 m, a bollard pull of 45 tonnes and a maximum speed of 12 knots.
Strażak-28 is equipped with two FiFi pumps with a capacity of 2,700 m3/hr each. It can also tow ships out of danger and provide search and rescue operations in an emergency.
Certificates and acceptance documents were provided by the Polish Register of Shipping following system tests and performance trials by the ship’s crew of captains, engineers, senior mechanics and seafarers. This includes its notations for FiFi2 fire-fighting and L2 ice class.
The 29.2-m vessel arrived in Świnoujście harbour on 14 November, and the handover protocol was signed on 18 November. A symbolic christening and flag raising ceremony is scheduled for 6 December.
Strażak-28 was built with European Union funding to fight fires on LNG and LPG carriers and to provide fire safety, towage and manoeuvring in the ports of Szczecin, Police and Świnoujście.
Polish investment in new LNG terminals is increasing as the nation diversifies its gas supplies away from being mostly dependent on Russian pipeline resources.
ZMPSiŚ purchased the fire-fighting tugboat with finance from the EU’s Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.
The value of the project is approximately PLN 40.6M (US$9M), with EU co-financing of around PLN 34.5M (US$3.62M).
