PITTSBURGH — The African American Leadership Foundation is tackling “The 5 Pillars of Health’’ with the ninth annual Health and Wellness Weekend.
It will take place at various locations on Friday, Aug. 19 and Sat., Aug. 20.
According to the Center for Disease Control, in Allegheny County alone, at least 304,000 people were directly affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic, hundreds of small businesses closed their doors for good, which affected overall community health and wellness.
The Health and Wellness Weekend was launched and founded in 2013 by then State Representative Jake Wheatley. The AALF said this community-centered event has grown tremendously with the support of partners such as Highmark Wholecare, Aetna, UPMC, Dollar Bank, Highmark, and Rivers Casino.
Ms. Madkins, Executive Director for AALF, states “We are excited for this year’s event, the overall awareness the weekend brings to our communities, and opportunities for individuals to achieve their health and wellness goals.”
“Most people think about health as an afterthought,” Mr. Wheatley states, “but this weekend is about making it a priority.” He continued, “You can’t be who you want to be without getting serious about your mental, physical, spiritual, environmental, or financial health. We see that people within our community are struggling with multiple health-related issues, and this weekend is built to give them some assistance or connections to one or all of these areas for some relief.”
Events for the weekend include a networking event for entrepreneurs and professionals, the “Historic Hill 5k” race for intergenerational runners, walkers, and bikers, and “Community Appreciation Day” with free food, fun, and entertainment.
