DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson, in partnership with the DeKalb County Human Services Department, will provide grocery gift cards to DeKalb seniors just in time for the holidays.
Davis Johnson invites seniors living in District 5 to register for the Health, Wellness, and Food Festival event, which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Lou Walker Senior Center, 2538 Panola Road, Stonecrest, 1– 4p.m.
The purpose of this event is to address food insecurity and the health and wellness needs of District 5 seniors. “We are excited to help fight food insecurity among our senior population, right here in DeKalb County,” said Davis Johnson. “While the holidays are the merriest time for some, it is the saddest time for so many others. We hope to spread love and share hope with our beloved seniors this holiday season.”
According to the Centers for Disease Prevention & Control Foundation, the COVID-19 public health emergency has significantly impacted older Americans and their families. Many seniors have experienced challenges getting basic household supplies, food, and health care during the ongoing pandemic.
The Senior Health, Wellness, and Food Holiday Festival will provide 400 seniors, who live in DeKalb County District 5, with $100 grocery gift cards. COVID-19 booster shots, and flu shots will also be available to attendees.
“We hope to bring a smile to a senior’s face who may be concerned about how they will feed their family this holiday season,” said Damon Scott, DeKalb County Human Services Department Director.
There is no charge to attend, however, you must be vaccinated and register in advance to participate. District 5 seniors who are 55 and older can register for the event by visiting Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson’s website at  www.commissionermeredajohnson.com.
