The Wellness Connection, an alternative health studio located at the Matchworks Building in Mentor, opened its doors earlier this year and has since continued to build a client base.
According to owner and wellness specialist Karen Martin, people “sick and tired of being sick and tired” are working to discover new or alternate modality approaches to ultimately feel better through practices that don’t merely band-aid a particular malady or condition.
Efforts can include everything from increasing energy and reducing stress to getting a better night’s sleep.
Sessions at the studio consist of lying on a mat that produces a pulsed electromagnetic field and using applicators to target specific areas of the body, Martin noted, adding that the field increases circulation in the small blood vessels, which make up about 75 percent of the circulatory system.
“An increase in circulation to the cells helps to better deliver nutrients, red and white blood cells and oxygen more efficiently to every cell, including the heart,” she said. “Likewise, the blood is able to remove waste products from cells more efficiently. Clients have been able to lower their blood pressure, boost their immune system and decrease the amount of time needed to heal wounds.”
The studio is also able to assist athletes seeking to improve peak performance and reduce recovery time.
“Clients have found help with relief for discomfort in muscles, joints, heads and backs, as well as reducing numbness, tingling, and pain in hands and feet,” Martin added. “Most people start by coming four to five times a week and once they are feeling results, can move to two to three sessions or just make appointments when they have an issue return.
“The most benefit is derived by using the full-body mat each morning and night, so the units are available for lease or purchase, and those who have bought one are very pleased with how they feel after just a few weeks of consistent use.”
And Martin knows first-hand — after experiencing the benefits of increased circulation herself, she decided to take things further to spread knowledge and aid others on their journeys to better health, enrolling in a two-day training along and becoming certified as a wellness coach.
Introduced to pulsed electromagnetic field technology a couple of years ago, Martin admitted initial skepticism toward its efficacy, not understanding the science behind it.
However, after trying it for a sore shoulder, and having quick results, she began to research it more and concluded “right away” that it was something that could help people suffering from ailments, including her father.
As she has prior experience with opening a brick-and-mortar spot, Martin was able to guide another pulsed electromagnetic field provider in bringing her business out of her house and into a retail space last August.
“There were three of us sharing a space, so it was difficult to have enough time to service all of my clients,” Martin said. “So, I branched out on my own, which has allowed me to add some other elements to my business, including a special spray and salts made from magnesium which allows customers to relieve muscle pain temporarily and help with inflammation when they can’t come into the studio.”
She is also researching additional items to stock that can work in conjunction with the increased circulation clients receive from their sessions.
“There is great joy when someone comes in after several sessions and does a little happy dance because of the results they are receiving,” Martin said.
To date, the studio has welcomed over 40 clients. As a Mentor resident for over 20 years, Martin noted it’s wonderful to have the support of the city, adding the Matchworks Building is the ideal setting as the charm of the décor helps create a relaxed environment for sessions.
The Wellness Connection is also collaborating with Aaron Cook, a physical therapist and owner of Fyzical Therapy and Balance Centers, to bring programming to senior and community centers in Lake County, with the focus of educating those over age 55 on neuropathy and fall prevention.
Future outreach programs are also in the works, Martin confirmed.
“The studio is offering a Self-Care Sunday event once a month by partnering with various experts in the health/wellness field in order to help my clients and those in the community,” she said, noting “Reiki and Relaxation” will be the topic of a workshop on May 15, co-sponsored by The Helicopter Daughter, a wellness and self-care retail store and Matchworks neighboring suite.
“Educating others about all aspects of health is important since the pulsed electromagnetic field is one piece of the puzzle that can help the body heal itself,” Martin added. “Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, moving the body regularly, along with eliminating toxins, are some of the other pieces that need to be joined together in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle.”
Those interested in trying the therapy start with an initial consultation, comprised of three sessions which are booked on consecutive days when possible as the residual effect of increased circulation lasts 14 to 16 hours.
“This means better results will be achieved when the first sessions are done as close to each other as possible,” Martin said.
The cost for the initial consultation is $50. Clients can then pay as they go for $25 a session or receive a discount by purchasing a package of five sessions for $100.
Complimentary sessions are given for referrals and each time two packages are purchased. Family discounts are also given.
