The African soccer confederation has removed Guinea as host of the 2025 African Cup of Nations because of inadequate infrastructure. The decision was announced after Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe traveled to the country to meet with Col. Mamady Doumbouya, the head of the military junta in Guinea who took power in a coup in 2021. Guinea’s hosting of the continental championship had been under scrutiny for weeks after an inspection committee made a visit in early September. CAF said its executive committee would meet in Algeria on Saturday to discuss the details of re-opening the bidding process for the 2025 African Cup.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched 5G services in India, calling it a “step towards the new era.” The government says the launch in select cities will cover the entire country over the next couple of years. Bharti Airtel is rolling out its 5G services in eight cities on Saturday and has set March 2024 as the deadline for countrywide coverage for as many as 5,000 towns. Reliance Jio telecom company plans to start from four metropolitan areas in October and hopes to reach most cities and towns in 18 months. Research agency OMDIA projects that with 369 million 5G subscriptions _ over half the total global 5G subscriptions currently _ India will be just behind China and the U.S. in world rankings by 2026.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has upgraded Malaysia’s air safety rating, allowing the country’s carriers to expand flights to the United States after a three-year hiatus. Malaysia’s Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong says the move will bolster tourism and economic growth in Malaysia, which opened up from pandemic shutdowns in April. The FAA lowered Malaysia’s rating in November 2019 due to non-compliance with safety standards, prompting Malaysia to restructure its Civil Aviation Authority and address issues. Now that they’re resolved, the FAA has restored Malaysia’s Category 1 rating, meaning it meets standards.

Ukraine’s nuclear power provider has accused Russia of “kidnapping” the head of a nuclear power plant occupied by Russian troops. Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom said Russian forces seized the director-general of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ihor Murashov, around 4 p.m. on Friday. Energoatom says Russian troops stopped Murashov’s car, blindfolded him and then took him to an undisclosed location. The company’s president said Saturday that Murashov’s detention “jeopardizes the safety of Ukraine and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.” Russia did not immediately acknowledge seizing the plant director. The Zaporizhzhia plant repeatedly has been caught in the crossfire of the war in Ukraine.
Doug Brumfield threw for 233 yards and ran for a second-half touchdown as UNLV scored 24 unanswered points and beat New Mexico 31-20. Polling stations are open in Latvia in a general election that has been influenced by neighboring Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Several polls showed the center-right New Unity party of Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins emerging as the top vote-getter with up to 20% support. Karins currently leads a four-party minority coalition. A total of 19 parties have over 1,800 candidates running in the election, but only around eight parties are expected to break through the 5% threshold required to secure a place in the 100-seat Saeima legislature. Support for parties catering to the ethnic-Russian minority that makes up over 25% of Latvia’s 1.9 million population is expected to be mixed.

Evan Longoria homered twice and drove in five runs as the San Francisco Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 for their 10th win in 11 games. Mike Yastrzemski and Austin Wynns also went deep as the Giants moved above .500 for the first time since Aug. 17. They also kept their slim wild-card hopes going with five games remaining, though a loss or a Philadelphia Phillies win will eliminate them. Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly, who came in 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA against the Giants this season, served up three homers and was tagged for eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.
