The United States finished the preliminary round of the 2022 Women’s World Championship on a high note, taking down rival Canada 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon to secure the top spot in Group A.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, the USA rattled off five unanswered goals over the final 40 minutes to grab the win to remain perfect at the tournament.
Megan Keller and Kelly Pannek scored in the second period to tie the game heading into the final frame. In the third, Lacy Eden scored early to give the Americans their first lead of the game before Kendall Coyne Schofield doubled the lead. Hilary Knight added an empty-net goal.

Savannah Harmon dished out two assists for the USA while Nicole Hensley secured the victory in net, stopping 26 of 28 shots. Canada received goals from Sarah Fillier and Ella Shelton. Emerance Maschmeyer made 28 saves in the losing effort.
All five teams from Group A advance to the quarterfinals while the top three teams from Group B advance. As a result, USA will face Hungary, the third-place finisher in Group B, in the quarterfinals. Canada will play Sweden, which finished second in Group B. All the quarterfinal matchups are set for Thursday.
The Sporting News provided updates and highlights for the Canada-USA game at the 2022 Women’s World Championship in Denmark.
4:19 p.m. — GOAL! Hilary Knights slams the puck into the empty net. It’s 5-2 USA with 54 seconds left.
4:18 p.m. — Maschmeyer to the bench, Canada with six skaters on the ice.
4:17 p.m. — Canada kills off the Fast penalty. Not a ton of chances created by the Americans, as instead they elect to maintain the puck on the perimeter and kill the clock. Two minutes left and it’s crunch time.
4:13 p.m. — USA is heading to its second power play of the game with four minutes left. Not a good penalty by Fast, who gets tangled up with Abbey Murphy behind the play and shoves her to the ice. It’s all USA right now and frustration is boiling over for the Canadians. They will need to kill off the penalty and then make a push.
4:10 p.m. — GOAL! USA makes it 4-2 with a goal from Coyne Schofield. A shot by Harmon from the outside gets blocked and then Coyne Schofield knocks it in. It happened seconds after a big scramble in front of Canada’s net courtesy of a Pannek shot that handcuffed Maschmeyer, who could not handle the rebound. It’s 4-2 with about six minutes left.

4:04 p.m. — Another chance for Eden and the USA. She collects the puck behind Canada’s net and has no defenders on her as she cuts in front all alone. She gets a couple of jam attempts on Maschmeyer but the puck stays out.
4:02 p.m. — Nothing doing for Canada on that power play. Americans did a solid job of keeping Canada to the outside, with any shots coming in uncontested and easy for Hensley.
3:58 p.m. — The physicality has certainly picked up in this one. The USA gets a bit too aggressive and Kendal Coyne Schofield is going to be penalized for boarding. Canada gets its second power play of the game. The team scored on its other opportunity in the first period.
3:53 p.m. — GOAL! The Americans have their first lead of the game less than four minutes into the third, thanks to a tally from Lacey Eden. A risky pass from Harmon at the point gets through the slot to Eden, who rips it by Maschmeyer.

3:51 p.m. — Savanahh Harmon walks into the slot from the point with plenty of time and space, cuts to the left and tries to beat Maschmeyer, who gloves it down.
3:29 p.m. — Canada survives a late onslaught by the Americans, who spent the entire last minute of the period in Canada’s zone. Two goals from the USA tie the game heading into the second intermission. Canada was the better team in the middle frame, but just like in the first period when the USA was stronger, the scoreboard does not reflect that.
3:22 p.m. — A horrid turnover in the USA zone by Jincy Dunne sends Canada in on a 3-on-2. Fillier finds the puck on her stick in the slot but Hensley makes the stop. Hensley has been sensational this period, keeping Canada at just two goals and allowing the Americans to get back in this game.
3:16 p.m. — GOAL! Just like that, we have a tied game. Pannek deflects a shot from Cayla Barnes that beats Maschmeyer. After a push from Canada kept the Americans on their heels, it’s the United States that gets the next goal. It’s 2-2 with less than nine minutes left in the frame.

3:15 p.m. — Canada really starting to buzz here as Jessie Eldridge deflects a pass off the post. The Americans are struggling to get the puck out of the zone and even when they do, they are losing it and the puck is going right down the other way.
3:12 p.m. — Canada has looked a lot better in this period. They are finally getting shots and chances on Hensley to go with extended offensive zone time.
3:10 p.m. — This is not unexpected, but this has been a physical game. Plenty of body contact, but the referees have deemed it all legal, minus the Pannek roughing in the first.
3:02 p.m. — GOAL! USA gets on the board thanks to a power-play goal by Megan Keller. A slick passing sequence results in Keller getting the puck in the slot and the puck somehow beats Maschmeyer. It looks like it may have gone off a Canadian defender.

3:01 p.m. — A couple of chanes early for the U.S. but nothing has gotten by Maschmeyer yet. The team gets its first power play of the game as Meaghan Mikkelson is called for hooking.
2:38 p.m. — Canada holds a 2-0 lead over the USA after one period. While the Americans were the better team for the majority of the period, an early goal by Fillier and late power-play goal by Shelton give Canada the lead. It’s simple, but Canada finished the chances it had while the USA did not. Shots on goal are 11-8 in favor of the United States.
2:35 p.m. — GOAL! Canada extends its lead to 2-0 as Ella Shelton comes through on the power play. With multiple bodies in the crease and Nicole Hensley down and out, Shelton finds the loose puck and slams it home. She had a chance moments before the goal that was stopped, but she eventually converts with under two minutes to go.

2:33 p.m. — A power play-chance late in the first for Canada as Sarah Nurse draws a roughing call on the USA’s Kelly Pannek.
2:29 p.m. — Here come the chances for the United States. Another scramble near the crease as Heise has at least two whacks at a loose puck, but no dice. The USA has been the better team but has not found the back of the net.
2:26 p.m. — Hannah Bilka nearly had the equalizer for the USA. A scramble at the side of net results in the puck finding its way through the crease. Bilka was at the back door but could not put it home.
2:24 p.m. — Momentum is on the USA’s side. The Americans have responded well after allowing the Fillier goal. The team is outshooting Canada 8-2 in the period but hasn’t had a ton of Grade-A opportunities.
2:13 p.m. — GOAL! Canada gets on the board first as Sarah Fillier continues her sensational Women’s Worlds with a rebound goal. Canada works the perimeter well, getting the puck up to the point where Renata Fast gets off a shot. It looks like Fillier might have blocked the shot down, but she knocks it in to give Canada the 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.
